3G Development in China June 29 - July 5

- China Telecom is to begin its second-round bid for CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) mobile phone purchases on July 3, the Sina Tech News reported on July 3. Via the bid China Telecom plans to buy 3.6 million mobile phones instead of three million as initially predicted.

- In the wake of the commencement of its WCDMA commercial trials in 56 cities on May 17, China Unicom kicked off 3G commercial trials in another 44 cities beginning on June 28, the Xinhua News reported on June 29.

Cities participating in trials include Datong and Yangquan in Shanxi Province, Huzhou, Lishui, Jiaxing, Shaoxing and Quzhou in Zhejiang Province, Ma'anshan, Chaohu, Tongling and Chizhou in Anhui Province, Shangrao, Yichun, Ganzhou and Jiujiang in Jiangxi Province, Weihai, Liaocheng, Rizhao, Laiwu, Heze, Zaozhuang and Linyi in Shandong Province, Xiangfan, Jingmen, Yichang, Jingzhou, Shiyan and Huanggang in Hubei Province, Mianyang, Leshan, Zigong and Meishan in Sichuan Province, Xianyang, Yulin, Baoji, Weinan, Yan'an, Ankang, Tongchuan, Hanzhong and Shangluo in Shaanxi Province, and Changji in Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region.

Meanwhile, China Unicom stated that the company will begin construction of WCDMA networks in another 50 cities soon, with an aim to deliver 3G services in 284 cities in China by year-end 2009, according to the same source.

- China Unicom and the government of Guangxi Autonomous Region have entered into an agreement, whereby China Unicom will earmark 10 billion RMB (US$1.5 billion; US$1 = 6.8 RMB) for IT deployment in the region in the upcoming five years, including WCDMA (Wideband CDMA) network deployment, the Sina Tech News reported on July 1. Pursuant to the agreement, China Unicom will pour around three billion RMB (US$441.2 million) into the region in 2009 and carry out projects regarding the promotion of e-government, e-commerce, public information platforms, and telecom infrastructure sharing. At the same time, China Unicom stated that the company will speed up the deployment of its 3G network in the region, aiming to provide comprehensive network coverage throughout Guangxi by year-end 2009, according to the same source. Aside from China Unicom, China Telecom has clinched a similar agreement with the Guangxi government, whereby China Telecom agreed to invest 10 billion RMB (US$1.5 billion) in the region.
